Though Sega lied about much of the problems from the Adventure series being fixed, those that can handle that and the load time will find in intriguing and somewhat fun addition to the Sonic series.

Though the town graphics seem sorta Dreamcasty, the rest of the games main stages are very fun and graphically appealing. Great use of colors and most of the textures are excellent. Many cut scenes are almost CG in quality, and despite the characters taller appearance, they do look really good. Voices are also well done.

As for the gameplay it is kind of messy still. Sega said they would have all the problems fixed from the Adventure series, but all in all some are even worse. For example in one stage your snowboarding down and suddenly the camera flips opposite, with no warning or anything. Later levels do this as well, but you eventually do learn when it flips (after several uncessary deaths).

Many unecessary deaths happen, and you’ll learn to be very patient and sometimes will have to take it slow through the levels. Even the slightest nudge of the stick will send you careening to your death.

As for the camera, will it’s very restricted too. you can reset it with L/R triggers, but the range is very limited. Tail’s new ring bomb move is annoying in that everytime you fire it , it resets back to a default view, even with multiple enemies to hit.

Load times are horrendous. At one point you meet Tails, it loads for 15 seconds, you talk for about 15 seconds, then another 15 second load. This happens numerous times throughou the game, and on the action stages expect 2-3 different 15 second load times at intervals throughout the levels.

If you are a big Sonic fan, and can handle the issues Sega has had years to fix but hasn’t, you’ll find the game very rewarding and enjoyable once you get the hang of the levels. Otherwise give it a rent, it’ll probably be one you either love or hate.

  2. Everyone else has said it and I’ll say it too. Horrible camera angles and extremely awkward controls. Load times are bad too. You’ll find yourself waiting 30 seconds or more just to load a cheesy 3 second video clip followed by 30 seconds or more just to load the next stage. There are too many points in the game where you aren’t really playing at all but simply pressing the jump button at crucial times and the springs and dash panels do all the rest. The game is a “learn as you go” style of play wherein the learning is not intuitive and you must figure it out by losing a life or two. This game is a disgrace to the Sonic franchise.

there are very few video games which lack at least one good thing to mention. This is one of them. This game is a total waste of time and money. The graphics are cheesy, the characters movements are choppy and erratic and at times they get stuck in a corner, the load time between scenes is extremely long. What irritates me most is that when starting a town mission, there is often a load screen, then a 5 second cutscene, and then another long load screen. Very very disappointing.

This is, unfortunately, a bastardization of the entire Sonic franchise.

When I bought this, it came in a box that said “Platinum Family Hits”. Trouble with that is it *still* hasn’t grossed over a million sales, even if you combine the 360 version’s sales with the PS3 version’s sales and look at it globally. It’s in the 700,000 range.

Enough boring stuff, here’s the kicker: It’s broken. This is not a finalized game. And the fact Sega can release a patch any time they fixed something but hasn’t done so at all is incredibly disturbing.

This was the first Sonic game I’ve ever played on any console that I’ve had a game over on the first level where none of the deaths were my fault. I’ve gone through solid objects, bounced off of objects and fell and gone the wrong way only (unintentionally) to get a time over.

What seriously irks me is that this game uses the same physics engine that Soulcalibur IV uses (the Havok engine). This was not in debugging long enough to warrant this as the final game. A beta version, yes, but not the final game. Sega has done much better with Sonic and the Secret Rings than this game, because Secret Rings is actually playable.

I was very excited to get this game when it first came out. I must say that the excitement wore off pretty quickly as I played through the game. It’s definitely got it’s high points, but the camera angles, the scattered storylines, awkward controls, and extremely long load times kill the potential.

Sonic really hasn’t been the same since the Sonic Adventure games on Dreamcast, and also since the days of the Genesis..I’m hoping that the upcoming Sonic & The Secret Rings will help Sega redeem themselves.

This game’s definitely fun to play, but there’s too many flaws.
