I purchased this game as a gift; the person I gave it to completed the game in 1.5 hours. The graphics look great in the game, and appeared to have a lot of potential. But basically, as Nancy Drew, you spend your time getting lists of missing items from 8 different characters, walk around the mapped estate both indoors and outdoors, find the 5 or 6 items on the list to complete that list. After doing so, you go to the attic of the mansion where the game proceeds to solve itself for you. This game was a huge disappointment to my ‘giftee’; if you are going to purchase a Nancy Drew game for the DS, I recommend either of the following: The Deadly Secret of Olde World Park or The Mystery of the Clue Bender Society, which give the player the ability to use deductive reasoning and to solve numerous puzzles throughout.

I had huge hopes for this game, that it might actually be a Nancy Drew game worthy of the title, after mildly disliking the Nancy Drew: The Deadly Secret of Olde World Park and Nancy Drew: The Mystery of the Clue Bender Society series. Don’t get me wrong, those titles were fun, but they used mini action video games to solve the puzzles, not brainpower. I had hoped that this would have puzzles to solve, but, alas, it’s just a mindless scavenger hunt. For those who want a mystery with puzzles to solve, especially for young girls, a better choice is American Girl Kit Mystery Challenge

As a child I loved Nancy Drew. I bought this game hoping for a good mystery. I was sadly disappointed. While the graphics are good, the game itself is very simple and quite boring. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

  4. There have been strange things going on at Twin Elms, a beautiful mansion built during the Civil War. Objects have been disappearing from different rooms, mysterious shadows have been seen, and much more. Miss Flora is convinced that there is a ghost behind this, but her granddaughter, Helen, believes there is a reasonable explanation for everything. It’s up to you as Nancy Drew to prove who–or what–is behind this!

The plot of this game is excellent! Fans of the Hidden Staircase book will be happy to know that it follows the basic plot of the book extremely well. Of course there are different elements and characters that were added or taken away in the game, but overall the plot and core characters are the same. Even though I knew who/what was behind everything, I still enjoyed playing the game and especially liked comparing it to the book. For those of you who have not read the book, I’m sure that you will enjoy solving the mystery behind the strange events!

As Nancy Drew, it is your job to find missing objects that have been stolen from the mansion. While most of the game consists of finding these hidden objects, you get some fun puzzles at the end of the game. While the puzzles aren’t terribly difficult, I still had a lot of fun solving them. The hidden objects part of the game can be easy at times, but there always seems to be one object that is nearly impossible to find…at least for me. LOL!

I was very impressed by the graphics in The Hidden Staircase. I am a fan of the Her Interactive Nancy Drew games, and the graphics in this game are definitely comparable to those games. The mansion and surrounding grounds are just beautiful, and the characters are very realistic looking for a DS game.

There is a small downside to this game, and that is the length. It can be solved in under an hour, and I wish that it was just a little longer. That being said, there is plenty of replay value in this game, as there are over 100 objects to find and you only find 30 each time you play. You also don’t want to dilly-dally when finding these objects, as you are trying to race the clock to beat your score and raise your detective level!

This was a delightful game and I enjoyed it immensely. Whether you are a long time Nancy Drew fan or someone who is looking for a fun mystery game, I hope you’ll give this one a chance.

    Happy sleuthing! :D
