While I appreciated the attempt at creating a storyline (mysterious murders happen and in order to solve the case, puzzles must be solved, objects need to be found, etc.), it did get boring after a while. Contributing to this was that there is only a limited number of locations which one visits again and again throughout the game. The items at these locations do not change so although one is given a different list of items to find each time, with a somewhat good memory one tends to remember where something is when getting to a location for the third or fourth time.
Some of the puzzles got more challenging as the game progressed, such as the sliding blocks puzzles which got increasingly hard to solve. But the biggest part of the game by far is finding those objects and I for one do tire of that fairly quickly.
Another thing that really got to me were the numerous spelling mistakes throughout the game. Wow. Never saw a commercial game that had spelling mistakes! Or would you know what, for example, a “Pirate’s Pale” is? Well – they meant you to look for a “Pirate’s Pal”, a parrot! Then there is the word “Champagne” which is misspelled as “champage” and several other words like that.
I just wish Amazon.com offered more games like Pahelika: Secret Legends [Game Download]. It was fun, challenging and not boring. But as it stands, “Cate West. The Velvet Keys” is just another run-of-the-mill “find objects” game. Good for maybe an hour (if one can overlook the sloppy typos), but really not more than that.

The graphics were good for this seek and find game, but I found the storyline extremely repetitive and the side games they give you to play aren’t very challenging or interesting. I was just not that thoroughly impressed with this game. It’s okay, but had it done in 2 days. They do offer alternate endings with the more things you solve and don’t skip, but it wasn’t interesting enough for me to go through it again to see them.

Like the previous version, this game is more than just find hidden objects, have some new puzzles and continue the history line of the first one (Cate West: The Vanishing Files). If you played the first, you need to play this one too.

This game would’ve been a LOT more enjoyable if the search scenes weren’t so disgusting! Every scene was so filthy I had the urge to bathe after playing a few. If I had to search through garbage like that in real life, I couldn’t, I’d be afraid to touch any of it for fear of contracting some dread disease!
Whatever the designers’ aim was in creating such miserable search scenes… a touch of gritty “reality”, an element of hopeless foreboding… as far as I’m concerned, they missed. All they accomplished was to sharply detract from an otherwise interesting storyline. Only if you’re into filth and grime, grunge and garbage will this game bring you any true enjoyment.
