Call of Duty World at War Collector’s Edition

My wife bought this for me as an early christmas present. I wholly enjoyed the previous CoD games, and was really looking forward to this one.
Unfortunately, the CE version is completely NOT worth your money.
Let’s list the bonuses, and the problems with each:
The Canteen: This is, in fact, NOT a canteen. It’s more like a flask. Oh… and it’s welded shut. A hastily applied sticker over the packaging on the back tells us that it is “For display only, not for drinking”
Ok, that’s not a huge issue, I mean, it’s just a gimmick, right? The other bonuses are pretty good still!
The “Day 1 edge”: First off, let me say that most of this will be second-hand information, because MY REDEMPTION CODE WAS BLANK.
From what I understand, there are a lot of people having issues with codes not working, codes not received, etc. In addition, the high-level gun is only available if you play the class it’s for. It’s NOT fully available… you cannot use it to create your own class.
For all of the problems people are having with their collector’s editions, there have been little to no response from the makers. Their support forum has over 100 pages of posts from people having problems, and there is not a single post from an admin or developer, answering them.
If you want to buy the collector’s edition, just keep in mind that you very well may not get your money’s worth. BUYER BEWARE!

I got this game the day it came out, but the store only had the collector’s edition. I usually don’t splurge on the “collector’s edition” of anything, but decided to give it a try, mainly for the special weapon and week of double XP.
First off, the tin is ok, but nothing special. The flask is a joke. As others have mentioned, it’s welded shut… totally useless, even as a paperweight.
The game itself – I haven’t played single player all the way through. I’d say it’s average from what I’ve seen… nothing special there.
Most people will buy this for the multiplayer. First thing after install, you have to download a patch before you can even play online.
After that, this game is basically COD4 with a WWII theme. They did incorporate the prestige ranking this time and vehicle perks are now available, but that’s most of what’s new.
Finding a game online is frustrating… when you select a server from the list, the game will attempt a connection and then invariably fail. I found that if you then (re)select your online profile, then look at your ranks and challenges or customize your weapons, within a few minutes it will reconnect to the server. If you go back and try to connect to the game server, it will connect (if it’s not full, etc…)
I’m sure patches to fix this are coming…. someday.
TIP: When you find a good sever, add it to the favorites. I never seem to have these problems when connecting to servers in my favorites.
As others have said, you can’t customize the kit with the FG42 until you unlock it at lvl 42.
Have not gotten my codes to work… the website says invaild code.
Probably the biggest gripe I have is that respawns are not “intelligent”. I will respawn and then an opponent will respawn behind me and gun me down, or I will respawn right in the middle of several opponents with no time to react. This is no different than COD4 and is more a matter of personal preference, although I don’t mind so much when opponents spawn in front of me.
Overall, online multiplayer is good, single player is average, but the extra paid for the “collector’s edition” extras was not worth it. Stick to the regular edition.

I buy nearly all my games from Amazon (along with everything else mind you), so this review is no reflection on Amazon. Amazon has always treated me well. I’ve been invited to review products before by Amazon, but this is the first time I feel compelled to do so. With that said, all I can say about this game is “WEAK”. Very “WEAK”. I’ve purchased about every shooter out there (mostly from Amazon) , and I really expected more out of this. COD World at War is so scripted, so linear, and so predictable it is a shame. How do you totally screw up the weapons sounds this bad? How do you do it? This game is so linear it makes PacMan look like Far Cry (Far Cry fans will know what I am talking about). And as mentioned before by other reviewers, the flask is phony as well.
I dunno this game just reeks of “B” team effort at best.
11/19/08 An update. Ok, I was a little harsh at first. I have to give CODWaW good marks for “battle immersion effort”. Forget the weapon sounds, but fix the AI and the linear bit and you got a decent game.
BTW- you can get a decent flask here:

WARNING: The following review is written by a total combat gaming snob who demands the best in online gameplay.
Hey, Call Of Duty fans: Let’s do a little comparison between “Joint Operations: Combined Arms” (specicially the “Combined Arms” version) and COD (any version), shall we?
What’s the point of having a sniper rifle if the enemy is always so close to you that you can just throw a grenade (or a rock)? Such is the laughable world of COD and its sardine can maps. In Joint Ops, the maps have no borders – you can fly, ride, drive or run forever in any direction. You can hike up a mountain side and rain down some death with a sniper rifle from over 1,000 away like a real sniper actually can. That’s 10 football fields end-to-end! But if COD is all you play, you have no clue what this is like. You probably think snipers shoot their targets from just across the street. In COD, that’s all the CAN do.
How about the ability to have up to 200 players online in the same map in all out full-scale warfare? Oh, that’s right – COD maxes out at 64. But then again, those sardine can maps only allow for that many. Get’s a little crowded in there, doesn’t it?
Tanks? APCs? Aircraft? Jeeps? Mounted guns (and even missiles) on all vehicles and aircraft? Dirt bikes? Yup – Joint Operations has them all, 100% pure user-controllable. COD? Nowhere to be found. Sorry, you’re on foot, you brainless grunt. Snore.
And for all you vehicle haters and “knife and pistol only” screweballs – you can totally exclude any vehicles or weapons in Joint Ops if you want to. Total flexibility.
Weather: In Joint Ops, you can even control the weather and time of day. Want to fight at night in the rain with nightvision? No problem. Add some thunder and lightning for some truly engaging atmosphere. Air quality and haze factor? Make it slightly hazy, totally foggy or crystal clear, and to any degree. It’s all up to you.
Parachuting out of a helo? And while your buddies cover you by manning the two miniguns? Yup, JO’s got that too. Joint Operations is all about combat realism. But this is nowhere to be found in COD. The best COD has to offer is sliding down wussy ropes in single-player mode only, and even then, you’ll never be the pilot. In COD, you’re not even trusted to pilot or drive vehicles. How’s that for insulting?
Armored vehicles like tanks and APCS, all different types, too, and you get to choose, drive and fully man them – Joint Ops is where its at, baby. But nowhere to be found in COD, other than immovable “eye candy” objects to hide behind while your enemies “prairie dog” you from the next mountainside over. Oh, wait, that would be Joint Ops. In COD, your enemies will be “prairie dogging” you from across the street because of the laughably claustrophobic maps. Insert incredulous scoffing here.
Calling your own artillery strikes by operating, aiming and firing the artillery yourself – Joint Ops has it. Nowhere to be found in COD. Matter of fact, you can’t even call in artillery until you make a certain rank. Sucks to be you.
Hand-carry guided missles like Stingers and Javelins to use against enemy aircract and armored vehicles? Only in “Joint Ops: Combined Arms”. You have absolutely no idea how deeply satisfying these weapons are to use, I cannot stress this enough. This apsect of the game lone is indescribably thrilling. In COD, you only get a taste of this, and only in single-player mode, and only when you are directed to do so. Imagine enjoying this in multi-player agaist all enemy vehicles. Stop drooling, you look like an idiot.
Joint Ops Combined Arms gameplay in general is so far more amazingly epic and huge than anything COD has to offer that it’s like swatting a fly with a sledgehammer. Vast battlefields spanning MILES and MILES. Long-range weaponry. Extremely powerful armored tanks and vehicles, as well as incredibly devastating aircraft. And for every weapn and vehicle, there is an equal weapon to counter/destroy them by individual players. Javelins can destroy tanks. Stingers can destry helos. Tanks and Helos can destroy each other, etc. No vehicle or helo can dominate a game and can be taken out by handheld guided and unguided weapons. It’s a totally even playing field with as many role, vehicle, weapons and fighting-style that anyone’s gaming fetishes could ever demand. None of this entire paragraph can be stated about any version of COD. Zero contest whatsoever.
Sick of playing COD and only being able to experience cool things in single-player mode, only to discover that none of it exists in multi-player mode? Don’t you feel ripped off? You should, especialyl since it’s all the single-plyer stuff that Infinity Ward slaps on the package to sell it. Sick of playing “dumbed down” jousting matches of endless, boring “run and gun” because the developers have you locked into tiny little sardine can maps that don’t allow for aircraft and vehicles? You should be. With games like Joint Operations Combined Arms being out for years, there is no excuse for these pathetic limitations and missing elements of true combat and warfare.
Map size, huge issue: imagine jumping on a dirt bike and going off into the distance and going “Evel Knievel” by jumping over hills for a while? You can do that in Joint Ops. COD? Not even. In COD, you can’t even walk in any direction for more than a minute before bumping into a very unrelaistic map limit barrier. Gee, that’s realistic, isn’t it? If Infinity Ward wanted to go for all out realism, they should make your voice echo like you’re running around inside a gymnasium – because you are. Whatta joke. If you think this is how gaming is supposed to be in a multi-processor, SLI-graphics world, then you’ve been smoking breakfast.
Rank and Weapons: Every map starts out with everyone at the same ground level in rank, and any rank awarded during gameplay is for status only and does nothign to change gameplay. There are no “old guard” elitist jerks with superior abilities and weapons to spoil the game. Every weapon available in Joint Operations Combined Arms is available to you during gameplay from the very start of every map, including the abiluty to roles and associated weapons as you see fit and unleash absolute hell. Oh, that’s right, you play COD or BF2, and you can’t do that because you have to make a certain rank before you’re allowed to touch certain weapons, commands and features. Sorry to hear about the money you wasted.
Speaking of price: Joint Operations Combined Arms is only $20.
Though there are not nearly as many servers to jump on compared to COD, the gameplay alone is worth it. 1,000 servers of COD is still COD – it just ain’t Joint Operations Combined Arms.
Come play Joint Operations Combined Arms (make sure it is the “Combined Arms” version, which includes the “Escalation” expansion pack), the game that STILL makes all versions of COD and Battlefield look like a joke. The graphics aren’t as good, but still worthy of praise and a small price to pay for utterly amazing – and unparellelled – gameplay and features. You will not find another game that will allow you to do what you can do in this game. Not by a LONGSHOT. Speaking of longshots, Joint Operations allows artillery, tank, sniper and all other weapons fire at ranges 1,000 yards plus, often actually disappearing back into the haze of the atmosphere. You actually NEED scopes and binoculars in Joint Ops. Imagine that!
Nova Logic got this one right, and in a HUGE way. Nobody else has touched it since, including Nova Logic.
Come see what you’ve been missing. If you’re going to be addicted to a PC game, this is the one.

I bought this as a gift for my son, so my review is based on his response. He loves the game, each chapter, the screen shots, the details, and attention to historical accuracy. But then again, he is only 13, lol.
